Participate 4.1.1 Digital Rights and Responsibilities Quest
How can a DLC ensure that citizens within the community have access to an environment where an AUP protects members as well as the community itself, where individuals uphold laws, and a cooperative/collective venture provides robust, safe, and ethical resources and opportunities for learning?
An AUP is like a constitution for the citizens. It outlines the acceptable behavior for its citizens. The AUP can outline expected behaviors and also what is not allowed. The policy should be comprehensive to ensure the safety of citizens, but it also needs to make sure that it is not too limiting so that citizens have access to resources.
This is a challenging task and the AUP needs to consider the following items:
• Updating regularly
• Making sure it is aligned with the technology plan
• Being easy to understand
• Aligned with a school or district Code of Conducts
• List of do’s and don’ts
• Considers all devices
• Applies to written materials (not online) as well
• A separate staff section
• A community member section
• Appropriate tone
• School Board approval

What is the best way to establish and maintain a flourishing DLC where citizens understand, observe, and are inclined to willingly support and ultimately benefit from Digital Rights and Responsibilities?
I feel the best way to maintain a DLC is to start by teaching students responsible behaviors through a digital citizen class. In addition, they should be given an overview of the AUP and be asked to sign it agreeing to the terms and the consequences if the agreement is broken. The AUP needs to be easy to access and reviewed periodically to ensure that the citizens are still aware of the policies. If a policy is being changed, students should receive a comprehensive overview of changes.
Reflect upon these questions and formulate a plan for supporting and protecting a Digital Learning Community through Digital Rights and Responsibilities. Afterward, post the plan in your blog.
Plan
1. Teach a Digital Citizen Class.
2. Review AUP policies and give students situations to see if they understand the policies. Have them determine if the situations are following or not following the policy.
3. Have students/parents sign the policy.
4. Have the AUP linked on assignments, so students can view it.
5. Periodically, review the policies with students.
6. Review the AUP frequently to see if changes are made.
7. Inform users of policy changes.
