A concept map is a great way to organize information. I have used them to plan lessons for many years. It can serve as a syllabus, a way to display information, or a way to attack a problem. I like the ideas of personalizing them for the type of learner. There are many infograph programs available for the visual learner. A basic outline may appeal to learners who like to do lists.

I think that a content map can be broad or narrow depending on its purpose. It should include a goal and a way to achieve it. In the online learning community, these can be used to scaffold learning or to enrich after you assess where a student is on the map. In addition, they can keep the teacher focused and on pace to have all objectives mastered.

In the concept map I created, I tool a 3rd grade science standard and mapped it. This is a great way to break down a standard for the teacher so you can plan. It can also be used as a review handout. I like the idea of having the students create their own concept maps. It can be a great way to assess if they got it!
