Blended learning has many models. In a strictly online
model, information and lessons need to find ways to deliver materials. This
blog discusses the differences in the asynchronous and synchronous methods and
advantages and disadvantages of both.
The main advantage of asynchronous learning is it gives students
time to actively participate at their own pace. It gives students time to
review, get feedback and reflect on their learning. They have the time to
critically think and produce products that apply the skills being taught. I
also can give students the opportunity to use choice and voice in their
learning.
Although this sounds pretty great, there is a risk of
forming disconnect between the learner, their peers and the teacher. The
learner could lose motivation and not complete work. Feedback could be slow, so
students are not able to adjust.
Synchronous learning offers students the benefits of interacting,
sharing, and the ability to collaborate in real time. This is helpful in
keeping the students engaged, promoting collaboration, and allowing pacing to
be seamless.
There are some disadvantages of synchronous learning. It
will require the student to be more spontaneous rather than giving students a
period to think and respond. The student also has to plan to attend meetings to
avoid scheduling issues. In addition, it can be challenging for students who
are introverts.
Both approaches can be very effective. I think the most important thing to consider
is the individual student. After all, that is what personalized learning is all
about.
