Having a weekly newsletter is a wonderful way to keep your class updated. I think that many times students do not succeed is they are not aware of expectations. A simple way to ensure that students are updated is a weekly newsletter. I like the idea of sending it out on Mondays at the same time, so it becomes part of the routine. I would include graphics to make it fun that fall within the Creative Commons copyright license. In addition, I would add a list of assignments due and when students are expected to participate in a live chat. I think it is nice to have a comment section on the news item in case students have questions. Embedding a video, of sample work is a great way to model for students.
