Discussion forums serve the purpose of making sure the curriculum is being understood. It is a way for the teacher to interact with students and provide feedback. In addition, the teacher can use effective questioning to make sure the students are critically thinking and applying the knowledge. Forums can challenge the students to synthesis information and make real world connections. Using the Socratic Method is a great way to challenge students. The forums should engage and challenge the learner. The questions should not be basic level knowledge questions. The questions should spark dialogue. The students should be able to have conversations that questions materials and encourages new ideas. Ambiguity should be tolerated and encourage different point of views. These discussions should build a community which helps the learners stay connected. The teacher should be an active participant in these discussions. It is also a good time for reflection. Students can share their experiences, challenges, and strengths. The students can learn from each other’s’ experiences.
